Welcome to Frugal Victoria, everyone!

Hello everybody! Welcome to Frugal Victoria -- a special welcome for those just visiting for the first time, thanks to the Times-Colonist article that ran August 5th.
We've already had some feedback -- including one reader who strongly disagrees that replacing a toilet is too challenging for DIY. What do you think?

Luminara 2010

Lots of questions this year because July 25th came and went with no Luminara in Beacon Hill Park. There will still be Luminara but rather than one single, central location, the celebration will be spread across the city in several neighbourhoods:

Frugal Halloween Projects

Here's a few projects that caught my eye this week:

Packing Tape Transfers -- this is good for any get together where votive holders (easily picked up at dollar stores) are going to be used.

Pop-up Halloween Prop -- if you want to scare/impress guests and trick-or-treaters, this pop-up may fit the bill nicely.

Self-Guided Heritage Walks

The City of Victoria has created 4 self-guided heritage walks, highlighting distinct facets of our city's history. I saw the pamphlets at the Bay Centre customer service desk and looking through them I think it would be a fun way to spend a few hours with (older) kids or to show out-of-towners that we're not all tea and crumpets! From the Arts, Heritage & Culture Guide, Fall/Winter 2008: The Secrets Are Out! Four walks to choose from. These four upbeat, informative tours with easy-to-follow maps are a great way to explore Victoria.

Tile Treatments

Get rid of that soapy film on ceramic tile walls or floors- wipe household cleaner ( either diluted or full strength) or a solution of 1part vinegar and 4 parts water over them.

Frugal Flooring

I think this may be one of the most frugal flooring tips ever -- duct tape "tile" floors.

More on Craftster; Emily also makes funky clothing out of recycled clothes and fabric which she is currently selling on Etsy.

Wa$ted

The hit New Zealand TV show Wa$ted is going to be running on W Network in Canada starting this month. The show's primary focus is eco-sensitive living, but along the way there will be money-saving tips too. Like it? Hate it? Tell me what you think!

Going Going Gone....

Bella Vita, a kitchen accessory store in Mayfair Mall is closing. All remaining regular-priced stock is at least 40% off; some other items are heavily discounted. Still not terribly frugal for those living on very little, but if you (like me) have champagne tastes and a beer budget, it's a great opportunity to pick up that spice mill, wine screw or those Maxwell & Williams dinner plates. (Also a great idea for wedding/shower gifts, as long as you're comfortable with the fact there are no returns.)
